The symptoms of Swine Flu are the same as for any flu virus and include:  fever, bodyaches, cough, and sore throat.  Diarrhea and vomiting are generally not associated with the Swine Flu.  You may come down with Swine Flu anywhere between 48 hours and 7 days after exposure.  If your child is in a high risk group and develops a fever of greater than 101 they should be seen in one of our offices.  If your child does not fall into the high risk category they may be treated at home symptomatically.

Tamiflu can be helpful with certain high-risk patients. With the recent influx of swine flu patients, Tamiflu is in very short supply.  Therefore we will only be prescribing this medication to our highest risk patients.  It is our responsibility as providers to ensure that there is enough medication circulating in the community for these high risk patients.

Vaccine:  The Utah County Health Department has control of the Swine Flu Vaccine.  They receive small shipments periodically.  When they have enough supply they ship doses out to Medical Clinics.  We cannot determine when or how many doses we will get.   If/When we get doses of swine flu vaccine, we will prioritize by high risk.

We currently have a limited number of Regular Influenza Vaccine and are prioritizing by high risk as well as our callback list.  We get periodic, small shipments of vaccine and should be able to meet demand for our patients.  Vaccination will continue well into November and possibly longer.

H1N1 Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Is the vaccine safe?
  • Yes, it is manufactured the same way that the seasonal flu vaccine is made.  Our providers all feel that the vaccine is safe.
  1. Do I need the vaccine if I have already had a confirmed case of the swine flu?
  • If your case of the flu was confirmed by laboratory testing to be the swine flu, then no, you do not need a vaccine.
  1. Can I get the seasonal flu vaccine if I recently received the H1N1 vaccine?
  • Yes, there are no time frame restrictions for getting the vaccines.  The only time we would be concerned about the timing of the vaccines would be if they were BOTH nasal spray, in which case they cannot be given within a month of each other.
  1. If we had an H1N1 vaccine somewhere else, can we get the booster at your office?
  • For right now, we do not know if we are even going to be getting the H1N1 vaccine.  I would not plan to get the booster at our office.  You can continue to check our website and we will let you know if we do end up getting some H1N1 vaccine.
  1. Why don’t you have any at your office?
  • Each County in the State is getting a certain amount of vaccine shipped sporadically.  Then it is up to the County Health Dept. to decide if they have enough vaccine to ship any to the offices that have requested it.  We have no control over how the Utah County Health Dept. chooses to distribute the vaccine that they are allotted.
